Very Very Useful Info about GRE

Graduate Record Examination - GRE GRE is directed by the Education Testing Service (ETS) on behalf of the Graduate Record Examinations Board and the Council of Graduate Schools for admission into all graduate academic programs (except management) in universities across USA and Canada and some selected universities across the world including India.
GRE Examination
There are two exams of the GRE GRE Exam – General:
consists of three sections i.e. Verbal, Quantitative, and Analytical writing
sectionGRE Exam - Subject
There are two versions of GRE Exam:Paper Based GRE EXAM Computer Based GRE EXAMThe student is given the choice of taking GRE Exam on paper or on the computer. This section helps to determine the students writing and analyzing skills. There are two parts in this section that needs to be answered by the student. The first part has to be finished in 45 minute time limit. The student has to write an essay on the issue of a give topic. The second part deals with analysis of an argument and needs to be completed within 30 minutes. Of the 3 sections the writing test is the first to be taken.
GRE CATIn March 1992 the Computer Adaptive Test (CAT) format of GRE was introduced to students. The GRE CAT superiority lies in its ability to asses the students level of intellect and present questions accordingly. The question paper pattern of the paper based test has been retained. The only differences between the paper based GRE and GRE CAT are In GRE CAT the questions are answered on a computer instead of paper and the questioner differs from person to person depending on their intellect.
The advantage in the CAT format of GRE is that, instead of all the students answering to the same set of questions, the GRE CAT test adapts itself according to the performance leave of the student. Since the first few questions play a crucial role in the progress of the test level, the students have to be more careful at the beginning of the GRE CAT test. Remember answering the first 10 questions correctly in GRE CAT will take you closer to a Score of 800 even if you answer the remaining questions wrongly. First 10 wrong and subsequent questions correct will not fetch you much of a score. Keep this in mind and spend more time and effort in answering the first 10 questions of GRE sections correctly.
GRE Exam RegistrationGRE Test is administered throughout the year. The student is allowed to take the GRE Exam only once in a month and a total of 5 times in one year period. The official GRE Scores are sent to the student and to the institutions to which the student would be applying within 10 to 15 days after the GRE Exam. The student can register for the GRE Exam online in the http://www.gre.org/ web site.
GRE Test DatesThere is no specific GRE test date. A test taker can choose his GRE test date and time in a nearby centre. The GRE test is conducted in almost all major cities around the globe from Monday to Friday two times a day. The problem associated with GRE test date is that during September to December most of the test takers tend to give their GRE test and most of the test takers will choose a day between September and December as their GRE test date. The GRE test dates between September and December will fill up very quickly and so many test takers will be forced to choose a test centre far away from their location to get a desired GRE exam date during this period. To fix a GRE test date one has to contact - Computer-Based Testing Program, Educational Testing Service, P.O. Box 6020, Princeton, NJ 08541-6020 Or calling: 1-800-GRE-CALLTesting Centers

How GRE Test Is Scored

How GRE Test Is Scored

Preparing for GRE Test takes dedicated effort and time, but staying informed on how GRE Exam is scored will definitely give an edge for GRE Test taker. I have seen many students preparing for GRE find it bit tough to understand the GRE Test scoring concept. Here’s a question I came across

Question on GRE Scoring

I just finished giving the first test in the ETS PowerPrep software, and was pleasantly surprised to have a score of 750. But when I was reviewing my mistakes, I was shocked to see that I made 11 mistakes! And the mistakes were pretty evenly spread out through out the section. The mistakes were in Questions: 3,5,9,14,16,18,20,21,24,27,28. We know it is a CAT exam, despite that fact, how did I end up with such a high score?
That made me wonder whether PowerPrep is reliable? I have heard people getting 780/790 with 4 mistakes, but still 750 with 11 mistakes looks like a bit too much. But if this is actually the normal scenario, I am more than happy . By the way, my math percentile rank was 84, if it helps by any way. I am hoping that I the reason for this score can be partly explained by the fact that I got 11 of the first 15 correct. Anyone knows how the math is scored in the real exam? I have heard though PowerPrep is a pretty good indicator of the real exam.

GRE Exam - First Few Questions
  • GRE Test is adaptive and first few questions will have more weight/points

  • Questions that appear in later part of the GRE Exam has less value.
  • All the questions that appear in the exam should have been previously appeared in exam under Experimental Section and based on how students answer that question, points/difficulty level will be assigned

GRE questions determined in such way will appear during first few questions and getting few answers wrong will bring down the score for sure.

GRE Score Range - Big Range
  • In the GRE Exam first few questions will help the system determine which score range the student fit in. For example, if test take get first 6 to 8 questions right, then GRE Test system will assign the range of 700 to 800. So, test takers score will be only above 700.

  • Next few questions tries to determine the scores within 700 to 800 range. If GRE test taker gets 2 or 3 questions wrong in first 6 to 8 questions, then the score range of say 650 to 750 will be assigned and following questions will help the system determine the score within 650 to 750.

  • It’s my understanding that first question will have value around 700 and getting it right will have next question of 730 in value. If student gets second question then next question will have 720 value. So, first 6 to 8 question will help determine the Big Range in GRE Exam.

Final GRE Score - Within Big Range

One the outer GRE Score range is determined, then rest of question will help determine the sub range of that. For example,if the Outer Range is 700 to 800, then next few questions will have value within 700 to 800. If the GRE test taker gets all the questions right, then next range will be set between 750 to 800.

Providing incorrect answers for one or 2 questions will reduce the range from 700 to 780 or so. But the hard part is to identify what is the value of each question. Best thing GRE test take can do is try to get all the questions right.

In the pattern Final GRE score will be determined. To answert the above students question, he should have got all the high value/weight questions right even though 11 answers were incorrect.

How to Improve your GRE Score

Follow the steps listed below for preparing for GRE Exam.

I’m sure it will increase your score.

1) There are lots of free online GRE practice Tests available. Take one of the test without any distractions and see how you score in Verbal and Quantitative.

2) For the questions you have answered wrong, make sure you find out why you selected the wrong answer and find how to solve it right. If you happen to learn a new formula or words, make a note of it. you could use a separate notebook, one for Verbal and one for Maths.

3) Also, spend at least 1 hour per day for GRE Vocabulary from Barron’s GRE book. It has 50 Word Lists. Try to remember atleast 1 word list per week. So, every week you can read 50 to 100 new words.

4) Week 1 read the first word list, Week 2 revise the first word list and then start learning the Second Word List. So, that you will not forget the words.

5) Best way to remember new words is to form a sentence for each word.

6) Next, take an GRE Practice Test again and see how much you score, and for mistakes you make, again evaluate what went wrong. In this way, you will learn new maths formulas and at same time your score will increase month by month.

7) No need to worry that you are scoring less in GRE tests now, every student initially has the same problem. Spending atleast 1-2 hours per day for first 3 months from now will get you going. In 4-5 months time you will see huge difference in the score.

So, the key to improve your GRE Scores and skills is to practice daily and if you select a wrong answer in your practice test, make sure you find the right answer and how to find the right answer.

9) Majority of the students make the mistake of not finding out the right answers for the questions they go it wrong in GRE Practice test. This is the most proven way to improve your scores in GRE. In your GRE exams (practice) and lets say you score 1000 and 2 months later in your GRE Practice test if you score around 1000 again, then I can say, 2 months of time spent studying GRE is of no use, unless the score improves.

10) If your score dosen’t improve, try following different approach for preparation. I will write about other ways to study for GRE. you to be notified of new article from this blog.
I’m planning to write about most effective way to score more in Reading Comprehension in coming future. If you liked this article, pass it on to your friends.

Do you want to know how much you can score in GRE, even before taking GRE Exam?

I have written about steps to improve GRE Score. But, having idea on how GRE Exam is scored will help students prepare in much better way. One of the blog reader scored 800 in GRE Math after getting some 11 questions wrong in ETS Powerprep practice test.

GRE - Time and Strategy

GRE Exam is all about strategy and timing. I have meet and spoke to so many students who took GRE and I was able to find a pattern, that will allow to estimate how much you can score in actual GRE Test. Wouldn’t it be nice to know the score range even before you take GRE test?

When Can I know GRE Score Range

You can find out how much you can score in GRE only 3 to 5 days before your actual GRE Test date. But, having an idea will help you to decide on which 4 universities to forward gre scores. That will save more than $100 during graduate school application GRE score forwarding.

GRE Score Calculator
  • I have suggested to take ETS Powerprep exam only 1 week to 5 days before actual GRE exam. That’s the only source where the tests are scored using the same patten asgre exam is evaluated.
  • You can take powerprep practice tesst many times. Only few questions will be repeated.
  • With 2 gre practice test in ETS Powerprep, you can take more than 5 to 8 times. Make a note of scores you get in powerprep.
  • Don’t take powerprep exam as yet another practice test. Make evey attempt to take it seriously and put your 100% effort to score more.

  • For instance, you can score 400 in gre verbal section first test and score 500 in second gre practice test. So, if you take 8 powerprep gre practice test, then make a note of the score and save it in ascending order.

  • Test 1 - GRE Verbal 400
    Test 2 - Verbal 410
    Test 3 - Verbal 400
    Test 8 - Verbal 450

Interpret GRE Score Table

  • If all the scores for example are within the range of 400 to 450, then its very much lokely your GRE Score in actual test will not go more than 500.
  • Lowest score you can expect is 350 to 380.
  • Which implies, you can score anywhere from 380 to 430 in actual GRE exam. This applies to both GRE Verbal and Quantitative sections in actual exam.

How True is the above Said GRE Scores?

I have seen so many students who take powerprep and when they say the scores to me, I can very well say, how much they can expect to score in actual GRE CAT. Here are some examples of my formula to estimate your GRE scores

I scored more than Practice Test Range

Is that possible? To score more than that maximum score in Verbal and Quanititaive section. Yes, if you scoring 750 in Math section, you can score 800, but if you are getting 700 to 750 in GRE Practice test, it will be tough sk to score 800 out of 800. But, for Verbal I really doubt, you can increase the score overnight from 450 to 650+.

GRE NEW PATTERN DETAILS

The Graduate Record Examination format has changed.
And everywhere I turn, there's panic. Students are frantically calling in to ask about the changes, complaining about dates not being available to take the test.
*GRE registrations begin in July
For those of you who not in the know, here's what the fuss is all about:
1. The pattern of the GRE is being overhauled.
2. Registration for the taking the exam in its existing avatar is no longer open (in India).
3. The earliest the test will be offered (in the new avatar) is mid-September 2007.
So, what's the big deal? Let us look at the impact of each of the three points one by one. First, the change.
*Improving English: Grammar comes first
What has changed?
The test has moved to being one that lays more emphasis on inference-based reasoning.
In fact, the names of the sections have also been changed from 'Verbal Ability' and 'Quantitative Ability' to 'Verbal Reasoning' and 'Quantitative reasoning'.
What this change translates to: It has become almost impossible to crack the exam by 'mugging up'.
For instance, in the existing pattern, it was possible to learn by heart a host of words, and armed with this, get a good score in the verbal ability section.
But now, with more emphasis on complex reasoning, this is not possible.
Therefore, as the new pattern requires more constant practice than overnight cramming, the amount of time that one needs to commit to prepare for the test has shot up.
If you are thinking, "That's it? What's all the fuss about?", think again.
Then and now
In the current pattern, the mean score that Americans get in the Verbal Ability section (out of a maximum possible 800) was 470, with the international mean being 439. Lower, but not significantly.
Here's the interesting part. In the Quantitative Ability section, however, the American average was 593, with the international average being -- believe it or not -- 686! What this means is that the rest of the world, on an average, is much better than the average American when it comes to hardcore number crunching.
The new test however, reduces emphasis on this, and increases, albeit relatively, the emphasis on:
a. English language skills
b. Context-based inference skills
What this translates into: The Americans are suddenly (apparently) smarter, all over again!
How to prepare
The average Indian is so used to 'mugging up' information that he or she stops analysing. On the other hand, Americans, at least at college level, are encouraged to come up with original work and question the existing thought.
Therefore, they are much better prepared to present critiques, analyse situations, read between-the-lines and work on complex reasoning based problems.
Thus, while on the face of it, it looks like the revised GRE is going to make it difficult for the Indian candidate, the test actually holds a lot of promise for everyone because it is based on reasoning, which is considered by the world to be one of the main strengths of the Indians.
Registering for GRE slots
Point number two and three will impact late risers.
If you were planning to go to the US in September/October 2007 or February/March 2008, and have not yet booked slots for the GRE, then you will have to postpone your trip to either May or September 2008.
I guess this should be lesson enough to reinforce the adage 'a stich in time saves nine'. After all, it is recommended that one apply to the universities at least six to nine months before the start of the semester in which one desires to enroll.
In a nutshell, the changes in the GRE offer a lot to people who are serious about the basics and their basic reasoning abilities, unlike the earlier GRE test that could be cracked based on your memorisation ability.
Keeping in mind all the pros and the cons, I'll sum it up with the age-old clich: That which doesn't kill you, makes you stronger.

TIPS FOR GETTING LOANS FOR MS!!!!!!!!!

Well guys, most of us would have to go for loans in some form or the other, and ofcourse for varying amounts. Now I have been going through a number of websites pertaining to bank loans and have come up with some interesting information. Most Indian banks charge 15% or above for international education. This is surely outrageous, though I concede that it is not the banks problem as they themselves have to work with comparatively higher interest rates than those prevelant in states. However in US banks give out loans at 11% pa and it is possible to source your funding from a US bank after your 1st year studies! Also most US citizens make use of FAFSA and get educational loans for as little as 6.5%.
Considering the various banks in india, I have come up with a few banks that do provide loans at better terms than most. Also please look for some non-profit organizations or upstart for profit firms for better rate plans and terms!

I have adapted this article from Fulbright commission report on the common questions from prospective students. I must add that this is only for starters. I would like those who have some experience to share the same and help expand this list. I will try and incorporate other questions as and when I come across them! I hope this helps!
Can I do a graduate degree in a field unrelated to my undergraduate degree? An undergraduate degree in your intended field of graduate study is recommended and usually required. However, if your undergraduate degree was in an allied field or was inter-disciplinary and you took, for example, one-third of your courses in political science, you may be admitted into a graduate program for political science upon the completion of a designated number of undergraduate courses at the institution in which you want to enrol. For graduates applying for professional degrees in subjects such as business (MBA), education or hotel management, the above rules may not apply. Relevant work experience may be important for MBA admission.
Can I do a Master’s Degree in one year? Some universities allow students to complete a master’s degree in one year. However, if you are asked to complete a master’s thesis, you may find it difficult to finish in les than 18 months. Additionally, if you have a teaching assistantship or research assistantship, you may find that your duties take up so much time that it would be difficult to complete your degree in one year. Some professional degrees have prescribed coursework which does not allow you to accelerate your time of study to one year. If you are applying for an MBA degree and you have work experience you may find that the business school as a special grogram which would allow you to finish in one year.
When am I too late to apply?Application deadlines at US universities range from November 30th to August 15th. If you start the process very late, you may still be able to find a university that offers your field of study and is willing to consider your application. Whether or not this is the university you really want to go to is another matter. If you have not taken the necessary standardised tests for admission, you need to plan on taking the tests and submitting the scores before the application deadline. You can use the Peterson’s Guide to find out about deadlines at US Universities.
What if I have missed the university deadline?US universities, particularly the major ones like Harvard, Yale and Stanford receive hundreds of applications each year, so deadlines are firm and you will need to ensure that the application form, test results and recommendations have reached the university before the required date. Other universities have rolling admissions which means that the deadlines are flexible and students may be admitted in the fall, spring or summer terms. In most cases, though, early application is advisable.
Can I work in the US once I have finished my degree?US Immigration law allows international students to gain academic experience for 12-18 months upon completion of their degree from a US university. The work done must be closely affiliated to your field of study and each possible job placement will be closely scrutinised by immigration. After this period, your US university degree will not entitle you to a work permit to remain in the USA.
Requesting Application Materials

Do I request information and application materials from the universities directly?Yes, each university has its own application process and you need to contact each university separately to obtain that information.

How should I communicate with the US universities, may I phone, fax or e-mail?All three methods are perfectly acceptable. If you start the process close to the application deadline, you may want to call because that will be the quickest method. E-mail is also a quick and inexpensive way of requesting information.

When I request information from the US universities, what do I need to ay in the letter? You may use the Request for Application Material included in your Graduate/Graduate-Business information package as an introductory letter. Do not attach documents or any kind of payment at this stage. Simply fill out the form (print/type your answers) and mail to the “Graduate Admissions Office” of each university. You may photocopy this form as many times as you wish.
Who do I write to for applications?Prospective international graduates should write to two locations: 1. Graduate School Admissions Office and 2. the particular department where they wish to pursue a degree. The Graduate School will provide the application forms and information for international students and the department will be able to provide the course offerings and institutional financial aid details.
US Standardized Tests – General Information
Which tests do I have to take?If English is not your native language and you have not completed a degree in an English speaking country, you will be asked to take the TOEFL (Test of English as a Foreign Language) exam. If you are pursuing a graduate degree in the Arts and Sciences, you will also be asked to take the GRE (Graduate Record Examination); if you are pursuing a graduate degree in a business related field, you will be asked to take the GMAT (Graduate Management Admission Test); for Law it is the LSAT (Law School Admission Test) and for medicine it is the MCAT (Medical College Admission Test).
When should I take these tests? The US universities will not consider your application complete until they receive your score report from the ETS. Since it takes between 6-8 weeks for your scores to be reported, and since many schools and departments have January/February deadlines, you should take all tests one year before your intended date of study, i.e. October or November of the year preceding your study in the US. You can send your scores well in advance of the application deadline date; the university will hold onto the scores and will expect your application in due course.

What are the GRE and GRE Subject Tests? How do I register for them? The Graduate Record Examination is a 3.5 hour multiple choice aptitude test. It tests verbal reasoning, analytical skills, and quantitative ability and is required by the majority of graduate schools. Some programs also require a subject test to be taken in your proposed area of study i.e. Literature, Computer Science etc. The GRE is offered three times a year at test centres throughout the world. Registration and preparatory study materials are available from advising offices. Application deadlines are two months in advance.

How important is the GRE and how well do I have to do?Although it may be required, your performance on the GRE becomes less important the better the other elements of your application, i.e. your undergraduate degree, transcripts, academic/professional references ad written statement of purpose. Graduate Schools do sometimes impost cut off scores, although a university is unlikely to reject an application for a poor GRE score alone. It will be examined objectively within the context of the entire application.

Should I take the GRE more than once if I don’t do well?Yes, but keep in mind that the universities will get all your scores for the last 5 years. You cannot prevent the universities getting a score you may not be happy with if you have taken a test less than five years ago. Once the universities have your scores it is up to them how they interpret them. The admissions officers may want to only concentrate on the highest scores, or they may even average the scores. Studies show that students only increase their scores 15% when they take the test again. If you are not strong on standardised tests and you score quite poorly the first time you take it, keep in mind that taking it again could result in an even lower score and just make your record look that much weaker. If you did fairly well on the exam but you are concerned and want 50-100 extra points, keep in mind that you may not do as well the second time you take it as you did the first time.
The Application
Should I type the application?Although it is preferable to type the entire application, many times it is difficult to obtain a typewriter so neat printing in black pen would be acceptable.
The application asks for a health certification, what should I do?This is not unusual, ask your family doctor to fill one in.
Recommendations

Who should write my recommendations? If you are applying for a professional degree, you should ask someone who knows you such as your supervisor in a work setting as well as your professors. If you are applying for an academic degree of r Ph.D., recommendations from individuals who have extensive experience with your abilities academically would carry more weight than someone you have worked with.

Do I send the recommendations myself? Most US university applications will include instructions as to how they want the recommendations sent. They may ask that your referees fill in the form and put in a sealed envelope and then return it to you to send on to the universities with your completed application materials. Some US universities may request that your referees send the recommendations directly to the, so you may need to provide postage.
Financial Assistance

What are my chances of getting financial aid?It is to the universities that you must realistically look for funding. Keep in mind, however, that about 30% of international students in the US receive major financial aid from university departments. Of the remainder, the majority are self-financed, while a small percentage are recipients of awards such as the Fulbright Award. The Directory of Graduate Programs indicates which departments offer scholarships to graduate students.

What are my chances of being fully funded?Financial aid does not always cover full costs so you should apply to other sources for assistance. First year students are less likely to receive assistance. There are three main forms of financial aid available. Teaching Assistantships which are usually awarded to students in the arts, humanities and social sciences. For 20 hours a week you may help a professor with lectures, lead class discussions, grade exam papers or teach freshmen undergraduates. Students in the sciences and engineering fields are often awarded Research Assistantships whereby a student will help with departmental or professional research projects. An Assistantship will typically cover the cost of tuition and fees for a year and sometimes a stipend is added for living expenses. Fellowships are normally awarded to students admitted to Ph.D. programs. They entail no work responsibilities and may cover the cost of tuition and fees plus a stipend. Full fellowship support for the duration of a program is rare and will generally be combined with an assistantship. All aid is awarded on a year by year basis, but should be forthcoming if the minimum GPA is maintained.

Can I work as a graduate student?International students are not permitted to work in their first year. After their first year, you can work on campus for up to 20 hours per week as long as you do not displace an American citizen or permanent resident. This work would probably not pay very much and would not pay enough for your tuition and cost of living. Under the terms of the student visas, teaching assistantships and research assistantships do not fall under the category of work.
